Feb 10, 2022 Alex Brecher

Do you want to protect your heart health? Heart disease is a serious issue, but it turns out that you can affect your risk for heart disease. A study in theLancet found that exercising just 30 minutes daily can lower risk for developing heart disease. Along with that, making healthy lifestyle choices can lower risk. And PatchAid Vitamin Patches for Heart Health contain essential and supportive nutrients.

The Impact of Heart Disease

Heart disease is still the top killer in the US despite the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, heart disease killed nearly 700,000 Americans, or about twice as many as COVID-19, which was third. Cancer came in second.

These are some risk factors for heart disease.

  • Having diabetes
  • Having high blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol, or high triglycerides
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking
  • Diet high in trans or saturated fat, or low in vegetables and whole grains
  • Family history of heart disease

As you can see, many of these risk factors are modifiable. That is, your decisions and behaviors can affect them.

30 Minutes a Day to Lower Heart Disease Risk

The study in theLancet looked at over 100,000 participants from 17 countries around the world. Participants included residents in urban and rural areas, people from low and high-income countries, people aged 35 to 70 years, and of a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds.

They found that people who exercised more had a lower risk for developing cardiovascular disease or dying from a related condition over an average follow-up of 6.9 years. Researchers looked at a threshold of 150 minutes per week. They found that it did not matter how people got their exercise in, as long as they hit that amount. These are some examples.

  • Going to a gym for 30 minutes most days
  • Taking brisk 10-minute walks 2 to 3 times daily
  • Having a job that requires a lot of physical labor
  • Incorporating activity into daily life, such as taking stairs, parking further away, and gardening or cleaning the house.

Whatever you choose to do, get your healthcare provider’s approval first, and ask about other ways to lower your risk too! Eating right or losing extra pounds are common examples.
